Navigating A Season of Heavy Spiritual Warfare: Finding God in the Midst of the Battle

I thought warfare and its aftermath were tough—crawling, scraping my way back to the feet of Jesus after each blow, cloaked in disappointment, frustration, heartache, or bitterness. Sometimes all of the above. I thought the darkness I felt would overwhelm me. And if you’re reading this, maybe you feel the same way—beaten down, spiritually exhausted, angry, and tempted to walk away from it all. You’re tired of the fight, tired of the weight, tired of feeling like things have only gotten harder since you said yes to God.

You’re not alone in this. Many of us have been in seasons where we feel like giving up because the fight seems too heavy, too unrelenting. You might be thinking, “If I wasn’t walking with God, maybe I wouldn’t have to deal with all this mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical warfare.” It’s as if the enemy is whispering, “You had it easier when you weren’t fully committed to God. Maybe you should just stop.”

But can I let you in on something? That’s a smokescreen, a deceptive mirage meant to pull you away from God’s purpose for your life. The truth is, the enemy isn’t attacking you because you’re weak; he’s attacking you because you’re a threat. He sees what you don’t yet fully comprehend—your destiny in Christ, your calling, the breakthrough just ahead. He knows that if you stay the course, you will walk into something so much greater than the pain you're currently enduring. The very weight you feel is an indicator that God is preparing something big.

The Battle is Fierce, But God is Sovereign

The story of Job comes to mind. Job was a righteous man, walking closely with God, yet the attacks he endured were relentless. He lost everything—his family, his health, his wealth—yet his story wasn’t about what the enemy took from him; it was about God’s sovereignty in his suffering. Job couldn’t see the bigger picture during his trial. He didn’t know that God was allowing the enemy’s attacks not to destroy him, but to refine him, to prove that his faith was genuine and strong.

In Job’s darkest moment, he cried out to God, questioning, lamenting, even despairing. But still, he held onto God. “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him,” Job declared (Job 13:15). That level of faith, that stubborn refusal to let go of God, is what eventually brought Job into a place of double restoration. And that’s the kind of faith God is calling you to. He is sovereign even over your warfare. The enemy does not have the final say; God does.

Warfare Is a Sign of What’s Coming

One of the enemy’s greatest tactics is to make you believe that this fight isn’t worth it, that nothing will change, and that walking away will ease the burden. But here's what I want you to understand: the level of opposition you’re facing is often a sign of the magnitude of the breakthrough God has prepared for you.

When you’re on the edge of something significant, the warfare gets heavier. The enemy comes harder, not because you’re losing, but because he knows you’re about to win. The spiritual atmosphere around you is tense because heaven is preparing to release something powerful in your life. And if you hold on, if you keep pressing into God despite the weight, you’ll find that the very thing the enemy meant to break you will be the thing God uses to elevate you.

Is It Warfare or Disobedience?

But let’s be real for a moment. While some of the battles we face are purely spiritual, sometimes we experience opposition because of our own negligence or disobedience. Maybe you’re feeling stuck because God has been telling you to leave a place or situation, and you haven’t moved. Or perhaps He’s asked you to let go of something—or someone—that you’re still holding onto.

We need to be honest with ourselves and reflect on whether we’ve created openings for the enemy through disobedience. Are there instructions from God that we’ve ignored? Has He been prompting you to take a step of faith, but fear or comfort has held you back? These are important questions to ask in seasons of warfare because sometimes, the battle we’re facing is one we’ve allowed to persist due to our own choices.

Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” God doesn’t leave us wandering aimlessly. He gives us direction, but we must be willing to follow, even when it’s uncomfortable. It’s crucial that we align ourselves with His will so that we don’t unintentionally prolong battles that could have been avoided.

God’s Encouragement in the Midst of the Storm

Even in the middle of the most intense spiritual warfare, God is speaking. He’s encouraging you through His Word, through the still, small voice in your spirit, and even through the people around you. But sometimes, when we’re caught up in the heaviness of the fight, we miss those moments of divine encouragement.

Pause for a moment. Reflect on the ways God has been trying to encourage you in the midst of your circumstance. Has He whispered promises to your heart in the quiet? Has He sent a word through someone else to remind you that He’s still working? Often, when we’re overwhelmed, we’re tempted to believe that God has gone silent. But He hasn’t. He’s still speaking, still guiding, still reminding you that He’s with you in the battle.

Moving Forward in Obedience

In the midst of spiritual warfare, it’s easy to feel paralyzed, like you can’t move forward. But God’s call remains the same: keep walking in obedience. What has He asked you to do in this season? Maybe He’s calling you to step into something new despite the opposition. Maybe He’s asking you to stay faithful where you are, even when you feel unseen or unappreciated. Or perhaps He’s inviting you to go deeper in your relationship with Him through prayer, fasting, or worship.

Whatever it is, God’s instructions are not hindered by the warfare around you. In fact, your obedience in the middle of the battle is one of the most powerful weapons you have. When you move forward despite the weight, despite the attacks, you declare to the enemy that he doesn’t have control over your life—God does.

The Victory is Coming

I know the weight feels heavy. I know the temptation to walk away is strong. But I want to remind you today that the victory is coming. God is getting ready to do something significant in your life, and the opposition is simply a sign that you’re on the verge of breakthrough. Don’t give up now. Don’t walk away when you’re so close to seeing the promises of God unfold.

Hold onto the truth of who God is, even when the battle feels unrelenting. Reflect on His sovereignty, trust His timing, and be obedient to His voice. The warfare is real, but so is God’s provision. He is faithful, and He will see you through to the other side.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what ways has God been encouraging you during this season of warfare?

  2. Are there any instructions from God that you have yet to follow? If so, how can you move forward in obedience?

  3. What steps can you take today to stand firm in your faith, despite the weight of the battle?

The battle belongs to the Lord, and He has already secured the victory. Keep walking, one step at a time, knowing that God is with you every step of the way.
